While the CDC is recommending separating infants and moms, it is a recommendation, and moms do have a choice in if this is the route they want! Please know your rights!! CDC recommended this for moms who test positive for COVID-19 or may possibly have it. Some hospitals are implementing this with every COVID-19 patient. Call your hospital and ask what the current coronavirus standards are, as things are constantly changing. Alternatively, you can:
-Have the baby in the room with you and keep the baby 6 feet away
-Before and after holding the baby, wash your hands and wear a mask
-Hold the baby only to breastfeed
Breastfeeding is so important in viruses like COVID-19 because breastmilk provides immune system support and virus-kicking antibodies that can help fight the coronavirus. Your body naturally produces antibodies for specific illnesses while you're sick! Separating can decrease the likelihood of successful breastfeeding! It can also increase stress for infants and mothers. This decision should be made with your Healthcare team!
